The proposal for the new Geneva Ice Hockey Arena, by gdap architectes, has won second prize in an open competition (two rounds), where xmade has collaborated in the design of the building’s envelope.
The new “Patinoire” with a forceful geometry, solves the program in a simple way with the intersection of two cylinders. The facade is divided into two skins: an interior membrane, eminently functional, where air and water tightness and thermal and acoustic insulation of the building are solved based on a light metal façade and an exterior membrane mainly dedicated to acting as a solar filter and a communication surface of the building towards the outside.
This exterior curved surface consists of a pre-fabricated ceramic/aluminium hybrid lattice with circular perforations of large diameter, incorporating LED lighting elements to generate a facade – screen, which hangs from the structure of the building from punctual metal elements. A group of concentric walkways inserted between the two skins, allows very simple maintenance and cleaning of the building.
